Cold is biggest opponent for swimmers at Saturday meet PDF Print E-mail

Even though it is called summer league, swimmers were reminded of winter as temperatures dropped into the 50s at the second Northwest Kansas Swim League meet of the season on Saturday, June 7, in Burlington.

While all individual events still ran as scheduled, relays were canceled in an effort to reduce the length of the frigid meet.

The overall team scores reflected the strong effort of the Holyoke competitors with Holyoke taking second place.

Goodland Swim Club took top honors above Holyoke. The team scores are Goodland, Kan., 367 followed by Holyoke 207, Burlington 196.5, Colby, Kan., 173.5, Wray 141, Oberlin, Kan., 75, Flagler 68 and Oakley, Kan., 17.

Coach Brenda Krueger was surprised to see her 8 and under swimmers do so well when the weather was so poor. “Generally they are slower in the cold, but I still had kids improving their times,” Krueger added.
