After losing to Akron at home in a one-sided match Thursday, Feb. 20, Lady Dragon basketball players closed out the regular season with a 20-point victory over Sedgwick County on the road Friday, Feb. 21.
Friday’s victory earned Holyoke a third seed in the district tournament. The Lady Dragons hosted Burlington in the first round of tournament action Tuesday, Feb. 25. Results can be found in next week’s issue of the Enterprise.
Holyoke 45, Akron 73
A slow start severely hindered the Holyoke girls’ team Thursday night as the Lady Dragons fell to Akron 45-73.
Holyoke lit up the scoreboard first as Zuri Lopez connected on a 2-point shot 15 seconds into the match. After two quick buckets by Akron, Maddie King grabbed an offensive rebound and tied the game. Akron quickly regained the lead and was reluctant to give it up as the Rams marched toward a big win.
After King’s basket, Holyoke went scoreless for nearly seven minutes while the Lady Rams continually broke the HHS full-court press for transition baskets. Akron finished the first quarter on a 19-0 run to lead 23-4 heading into the second period.
“Our defense just could not come up with stops against Akron,” coach Arlan Scholl said. “We worked hard, but came up short.”
Holyoke had a much better showing in the second quarter, led offensively by Megan Vieselmeyer who scored eight points with an accurate jump shot. Even with the improved offensive production, Holyoke was outscored 13-19 in the quarter to trail 17-42 at half.
