HHS girls’ basketball posted a perfect week, going 2-0 at home against Haxtun Thursday, Feb. 13 and Fleming Saturday, Feb. 15.
“We earned two good wins this past week,” Arlan Scholl said. “We started very slow offensively in both of these games, but the girls stayed with it and continued to play through the offensive struggles to get the two wins.”
Holyoke 53, Haxtun 47
Four quarters wasn’t enough to determine the better team Thursday as the HHS girls’ basketball squad hosted Haxtun. In the exciting overtime match, Holyoke held on in the extra period to top their cross-county foes 53-47.
With the win, the Lady Dragons improve to 3-3 in league matches counting toward district seeding.
Holyoke’s defense shined in the first quarter, forcing five turnovers on Haxtun’s first six possessions. However, after gaining a 4-0 lead 90 seconds into the game, the Lady Dragon offense hit a cold streak, going scoreless the remainder of the period.
Haxtun finished the first quarter on a 12-0 run to take a 12-4 lead.
A few successful Haxtun shots from close range in the opening minutes of the second quarter had Holyoke girls eyeing the biggest deficit of the game at 4-16. The Lady Dragon offense came alive near the midway mark of the second period with Maddie King battling in the paint for nine points.
