With a snowstorm hitting much of the state last week, Holyoke basketball girls had their schedule cut in half. After Friday’s away game with Akron was rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 10, the Lady Dragons traveled to Caliche Saturday, Feb. 1, where they fell 30-58.
The loss drops Holyoke to 6-7, 1-3 in league play. Caliche remains unbeaten at 13-0 for the top spot in the Lower Platte conference and second overall in the 1A class according to Maxpreps.com.
“We worked very hard this past week on being aggressive and pushing the ball against the Caliche press,” coach Arlan Scholl said. “We were able to do that and had some success in getting the ball down the court quickly and getting good scoring opportunities. We weren’t able to finish and convert some of those opportunities into baskets and that probably hurt us at the first of the game. We also struggled offensively in our half court sets throughout the game.”
After Caliche lit up the scoreboard first 90 seconds into the game, four different HHS players scored to give Holyoke an 8-2 lead. The Lady Buffs were shut out offensively for the next six minutes, but connected on two baskets with under 20 seconds left to cut their deficit to 7-10 after one quarter.
With Holyoke struggling to get past the Caliche press, the Lady Buffs opened the second period on an 11-2 run. Once taking the lead early in the period at 11-10, Caliche did not relinquish control for the remainder of the match.
