Kenton Bogan, a sixth-grade student at Julesburg Elementary and a member of Raising Ranchers 4-H Club in Phillips County, was honored recently as the first-place winner in the Colorado Veterans of Foreign Wars Patriot’s Pen essay contest.
Bogan attended the Colorado VFW awards banquet for the Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen essay winners in Security on Saturday, Jan. 25, where he read his winning essay as part of the program.
Bogan’s essay, “The Colors of Patriotism,” was judged first out of more than 700 entrants in the state.
The Patriot’s Pen contest is open to sixth- through eighth-graders and gives these students the opportunity to express themselves in 300-400 words based upon a specific prompt. This year the prompt was “What patriotism means to me.”
