Dragon wrestlers tied for fourth and were only a half point from third place in the Banner County Invitational in Harrisburg, Neb., Saturday, Dec. 14.
Two wrestlers made it to the championship match with Eric Rojo winning the 106-lb. championship and Issac Brandt taking second at 126 lbs.
Additionally, Holyoke ended the tourney with two third-placers and four fourth-place finishers. Fernando Lopez wrestled in the same weight division as Brandt and finished third right behind his teammate. Luke Stewart took third at 160.
Fourth-place finishes were earned by Dylon Lousberg at 132 lbs.; Javy Rojo, 152; Marques Harvey, 182; and Dennis Amaya, 195.
Coach Cutter Garrison said the tournament Saturday was great because it was round robin pool style so the guys got one of the key ingredients a young team needs—mat time and experience. Each wrestler competed in at least four matches on the day.
Garrison commended Rojo, saying he looked great as he took care of business and won the gold medal.
“We still have a long ways to go, but each match we wrestle I am seeing progress and improvement,” said the coach.
He added that it will hopefully all come together by regionals.
