For those who have struggled with big, bulky eyeglasses or dry and uncomfortable contact lenses, a solution may be in sight.

Laser eye surgery is becoming increasingly more popular, and in around 10 minutes per eye, it’s a quick fix to lifelong vision problems.

“As far as my procedure, I consider it simple and quick,” said Arlan Scholl, a Holyoke resident who had the surgery in 2002. “What you get, you get right away.”

Arlan Scholl celebrates the freedom of life without glasses following LASIK eye surgery over 10 years ago, a procedure option growing in popularity for many Americans struggling with vision problems.

After years of struggling with “those old heavy glasses” and scratchy hard contact lenses, Scholl experienced a night and day difference of going from “legally blind” to 20/20 vision.

Since getting glasses for nearsightedness as a third-grader, Scholl said his quality of life wasn’t too great with glasses, but after the surgery, “all of a sudden, without your glasses, you can live life!”

Scholl had LASIK eye surgery, the most common type of refractive surgery. Short for laser-assisten in-situ keratomileusis, the surgery changes the shape of the cornea, which is the dome-shaped transparent tissue at the front of the eye.
