There is no better start to the volleyball season than winning in a quick three-set match to set the tone for the year. And that is exactly what the Lady Dragons did Tuesday, Sept. 3 when they topped the Merino Lady Rams 25-21, 25-21 and 25-22.
“We always want to win in front of our home crowd,” said coach Michelle Vieselmeyer. She went on to add that winning the first game of the season is a good confidence booster for the girls on the team.

In the first set, HHS jumped out to a 6-1 lead but Merino refused to lay down, rattling off seven straight points to take the lead. Once HHS regained the lead at 11-10, they never looked back, going on to win 25-21.
The second set saw each team go on spurts where they dominated the scoring column. Down 14-16, Holyoke utilized one of these runs to gain a 20-16 lead before finishing off the Lady Rams 25-21.
It was a back-and-forth third set that included five lead changes. The two teams were neck and neck until Merino went on an 11-2 run to go up 17-12. The Lady Dragons knotted the score up at 22 and fended off the Lady Rams for a 25-22 win.
