Holyoke fourth-grader Tyler Camblin took Grand Champion Market Beef honors at the Jr. Livestock Sale at the Colorado State Fair in Pueblo.

Melissa Memorial Hospital will begin a new community program focusing on end-of-life care on Sept. 9.

Sarah Heermann of Holyoke ranked in the top five in three divisions and top 10 in a fourth in Level II age 14-15-year-old horse competition at the Colorado State Fair in Pueblo Aug. 22-24.

Sept. 4, 2003

Kelsey Kunkel of Lamar, Neb., is opening Holyoke Dance Academy and will begin dance classes at the Peerless Center in Holyoke on Sept. 8.

Northeastern Colorado School of Gymnastics opens for business Sept. 8 at the Peerless Center gymnasium with gymnastics teacher Jessica (Koch) Burris.

Phillips County Farm Bureau hosted a forum on biopharming on Aug. 27 at the Peerless Center, addressing the benefits and concerns of Plant-Made Pharmaceuticals.

Sept. 8, 1988

Dusty Hoffmann started business in the Holyoke area this past spring, providing service on all kinds of center pivot sprinklers. Dusty’s Sprinkler Service operates out of Hoffmann’s place of residence east of Holyoke.

Announcement was made last week that Vicki Gillett of Holyoke purchased the Dinky Pizza Parlor from Mark and Julie Lambert, effective Sept. 1.

Brady and Brandi Haynes of Holyoke attended the 1988 13th annual Twins Day Festival in Twinsburg, Ohio, Aug. 6-7. This year’s event was the largest known gathering of twins in the world and is listed in the “Guinness Book of World Records” as such.


Forty Years Ago
Sept. 6, 1973

Tyle Hembry, plant manager of the Wycon retail plant at Holyoke, today announced that a newly formed Colorado corporation, AgriChem, Inc., has finalized the purchase of the multi-million dollar Wycon retail division.

Phillips County Telephone Company’s share of laying the underground telephone cable from Holyoke to Paoli has been completed and will be made operational by Oct. 31, doing away with open overhead telephone wires between Holyoke and Sterling. This is one change that must be made before Holyoke is ready for direct dialing, which is expected in early 1975.


Fifty Years Ago
Sept. 5, 1963

Construction of the new Christian Church in Holyoke is expected to get under way sometime this month, a church spokesman reported this week.

Big Boy, the 1,145-pound junior show reserve champion Hereford whose young owner died last Easter, was sold eight times Tuesday night at the Colorado State Fair’s junior fat stock sale. A total of $1,100 from seven bidders was contributed to the Boys’ Ranch at La Junta in memory of the late Bob McCune of Amherst.
