Phillips County Commissioners voted Monday, Aug. 19 to place the 51st state issue on the Nov. 5 ballot this fall.
The question put to the voters of Phillips County will be, “Shall the Board of County Commissioners of Phillips County, in concert with the county commissioners of other Colorado counties, pursue becoming the 51st state of the United States of America?”
The board decided to place the issue on the ballot to allow Phillips County residents to voice their concerns, positive or negative, on the recent actions taken by the Colorado legislature.
The county is still going forward, with a majority of the other northeastern Colorado counties, with an effort to change the way Coloradans are represented in one of the legislative houses from being based upon population to representation by county. That effort will take place by seeking to place a bill before the 2014 legislature.
