Laura Gerk earned an Academic All Region Award from the National Junior College Athletic Association Region IX for the 2012-2013 year. She plays softball for the Northeastern Junior College Plainswomen. She is also a member of the NJC honors program and Phi Theta Kappa.

Gerk was also recently recognized as a winner of a scholarship from the CHS Foundation.

Gerk, a 2012 HHS graduate, is the daughter of Casey and Hollie Gerk. She has committed to play softball with the Plainswomen for the 2013-2014 season. Gerk is a sophomore studying pre-veterinary medicine at NJC in Sterling.

Phawn Carper, daughter of Gary and Paula Carper of Holyoke, was named to the Dean’s List of Distinction in recognition of her outstanding scholarship for the 2012-13 academic year at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. She attained a 4.0 GPA for the academic year.

Janna Smith, daughter of John and Denise Smith of Holyoke, was recognized for academic achievement at several year-end celebratory banquets and award nights at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling.

Smith was recognized as an outstanding sophomore chemistry student, outstanding animal science student, top academic rodeo team member and outstanding agriculture student of the year. She also made the president’s list honor roll and Phi Theta Kappa academic honor society membership.

Marissa Smith was one of 64 Colorado State University student-athletes to earn a total of 72 Scholar-Athlete awards from the Mountain West for their work in the classroom during the 2012-13 academic year. The 64 individuals honored is a program record, and the 72 overall selections ties CSU’s all-time mark.

Smith, a 2010 HHS graduate and the daughter of Dave and Rhonda Smith of Holyoke, was a junior on the CSU women’s track and field team, and as a health and exercise science major, she holds a 3.56 GPA. The MW Scholar-Athlete award is the highest academic honor bestowed by the conference.
