Holyoke baseball players traveled to Fleming June 19-23 for the summer season’s baseball tournament. Tournament play was only scheduled for June 19-22, but inclement weather forced the Babe Ruth championship game to be postponed until Sunday, June 23.

Following the Little League championship game on Saturday, lightning was spotted west of Fleming.

A few minutes later, the umpire informed the players that the tornado whistle was about to go off and everyone needed to go to the basement at the Assembly of God or the Methodist Church.

Holyoke ended up in the Methodist Church basement with the Segdwick County team. During the hour spent in the basement, the mood shifted from competitive to a feeling of safety and the teams even got together for a group picture.

The siren went off twice before the Fleming Volunteer Fire Department gave them the all-clear. The Babe Ruth game scheduled to follow the Little League championship was then postponed to Sunday.

In addition, to the siren scare, Babe Ruth faced a two-hour rain delay on Friday, June 21 in their game against Haxtun.

With a first-place title for Holyoke Little League and a runner-up placing for Babe Ruth, Holyoke displayed a strong athletic presence at the baseball tournament. All of the teams performed well as PeeWee Green finished in fourth place and PeeWee Gold took sixth place.

Entering the tournament as the No. 2 seed, Holyoke Little League received a bye in the first round.

Little League worked their way to the final game by defeating Haxtun 3-2 in the semifinals.

Holyoke Little League claimed the championship game against Oshkosh, 9-1.

Babe Ruth players worked hard to finish the tournament in second place. They defeated Oshkosh in the first round 7-0 to move on to play Haxtun. After seven innings, Holyoke won 5-3.

Scheduled to play Sedgwick County Saturday, June 22, foul weather forced play to be moved to Sunday. Sedgwick County defeated Holyoke Babe Ruth 1-12.

Holyoke PeeWee Green faced Chappell for their first game. Holyoke claimed a win in the fourth inning 5-4.

The team advanced to play Sedgwick County, but was defeated 1-6. Moving to the consolation bracket, PeeWee Green faced Haxtun. Losing 3-13, PeeWee Green took fourth in the tournament.

PeeWee Gold suffered a loss of 0-1 against Oshkosh in their first game.

The next game was played against Fleming where Holyoke won 6-4.

In their final game, PeeWee Gold players were defeated by Chappell 2-4, giving them a sixth place finish in the tournament.
