Golden Plains Area Extension agents are busy this season performing on-farm research addressing a number of production issues. Examples include crop variety trials, pest monitoring and weed management research trials.

Variety trials are established for wheat, corn, sorghum, sunflowers and other crops. Wheat field days have recently been held and will be harvested in the coming weeks.

Spring planted crops will have field days throughout the summer so keep an eye on the Golden Plains Ag Newsletter for dates. The newsletter can be accessed online at http://goldenplains.colostate.edu or stop by the local Extension office to get a copy.

One example of on-farm research underway this season is a herbicide trial in rangeland grasses. A weed research site in Sedgwick County involves numerous CSU scientists evaluating effectiveness of herbicide mixes on persistent range weeds, including Ron Meyer, who helped layout the research plot. The cooperating landowner is Gary Lancaster.

Assefa Gebre-Amlak has initiated the Pest Alert Program for 2013 and has begun monitoring pheromone traps throughout the Golden Plains area. Watch for Gebre-Amlak’s press releases describing when pests in the area are active and scouting and control measures are warranted.
