The National FFA Organization, in partnership with John Deere, recently awarded $10,000 in scholarships to five area high school FFA students.
Winners were Janna Smith of Holyoke (Haxtun FFA), Alexandria Weber of Fort Morgan FFA, Mary Lenz of Wray FFA, Kaitlyn Richie of HiPlains FFA and Derek Whittington of Fleming FFA.
These scholarships are from MV Equipment and John Deere Company through a special project of the National FFA Foundation.
There were 1,645 scholarships awarded through the National FFA Organization’s scholarship program this year. Currently, 127 sponsors contribute more than $2.1 million to support scholarships for students.
For 29 years, scholarships have been made available through funding secured by the National FFA Foundation. This generous funding comes from individuals, businesses and corporate sponsors to encourage excellence and enable students to pursue their educational goals.
The 2013 scholarship recipients were selected from 6,116 applicants from across the country. Selections were based on the applicant’s leadership, academic record, FFA and other school and community activities, supervised agricultural or work experience in agricultural education and future goals.
The five northeast Colorado recipients were recognized at the Colorado State FFA convention, which was held in Sterling June 4-6.
