Sluggers back in action in Neb. PDF Print E-mail

The Holyoke Sluggers continue to stay busy with summer tournament as the young team traveled to Ogallala, Neb., Saturday-Sunday, June 8-9 for another tournament.

In the first match of the tournament, the Sluggers fell to the team from North Platte, Neb., 6-5. The Sluggers were actually down 6-0 in the last inning but made a run at the end that nearly tied the game.

Caleb Deaver and Mason King combined to allow seven hits and two walks while striking out eight.

In another close game, the Sluggers fell to Scottsbluff, Neb., 5-4. Blake Mosenteen threw the first six innings and King and Deaver finished the last inning. The trio combined to allow six hits and six walks and struck out seven.

Mosenteen led the way at the plate with a double and a triple while King and Trevor Peterson each contributed a pair of singles.

Holyoke faced the same two teams on Sunday and managed to even their records with both squads.

The Sluggers took down Scottsbluff 6-5 in the day’s first game. Peterson and Deaver pitched for the Sluggers, allowing six hits and three walks and striking out four.

Slaten Burris and Peterson each hit a single and double in the match.

For the last game of the tournament, Holyoke took down North Platte 9-3.

Mosenteen threw a complete game, allowing six hits and striking out six.

Mosenteen helped his own cause at the plate, lacing two doubles in the game. Xander Speicher and Peterson each had a single and a double in the game as well.

“Overall, we played really solid and smart defensively and got very good pitching,” coach Ron Lock said. “We played the same teams both days so it’s good that our wins came on Sunday. I guarantee you that we feel better about how we finished the tournament than the teams we played do.”
