Holyoke school board voted unanimously at the May 20 meeting to implement random drug testing for Holyoke JR/SR High students who are involved in extracurricular activities.

East Phillips County Hospital District board members voted unanimously to sign a contract presented by PC Telcom to purchase the old Family Practice medical clinic building at 520 S. Interocean Ave.

The Holyoke area experienced extreme wind damage, primarily Wednesday evening, May 21, with heavy rains Wednesday, Thursday and Friday last week.

Holyoke police officer Sean Mitchell was called to active duty with the National Guard on May 20, bringing Holyoke’s already slim police force from three officers down to two.

Holyoke Assembly of God church will host the Wickstrom International Kids Krusade beginning Sunday, June 1 in a series of four special family programs.

In an attempt to avoid major traffic areas, new pickup and drop-off zones for Holyoke school buses have been proposed by transportation director Robert Jacobs.

June 2, 1988

A car show, kids’ rides, ice cream social and horseshoe pitching will all be included in Holyoke Chamber of Commerce’s Old-Fashioned Saturday this Saturday, June 4 in downtown Holyoke.

Holyoke area residents will soon have the convenience of their own aluminum recycling center. Pioneer Distributing, the local Coors distributor, in conjunction with the Adolph Coors Company’s Cash for Cans program, announced an opening date of May 24 for Holyoke’s new aluminum collection center.

Garen and Janice Beck, owners of Beck’s Bargain Barn in Holyoke, have announced their intent to close the business Aug. 1. The couple opened the local business at 201 E. Denver in October of 1983 and moved it to its current location at 444 E. Denver in March of 1986.

May 31, 1973

The Holyoke FBLA and FFA chapters participated in the all-school trash cleanup day help on Monday, May 21. Several trucks with crews picked up trash, bottles, cans, etc. along highways and county roads around Holyoke, netting approximately 25 tons of rubbish.

Ted Fiedler, former mayor of Holyoke, and three other men from the Department of Commerce in Washington, D.C., are in Africa to establish trade relations in various parts of that country.

High winds that plagued Holyoke for three days caused severe damage to trees and field crops last weekend.

May 30, 1963

With between 200 and 300 local citizens participating, the Holyoke Diamond Jubilee pageant, “Holyoke-Arama,” is an outstanding spectacle, by far the largest performance of any kind ever staged in this community.

Melvin Borgens recently bought Joel’s 8-Ball Recreation Parlor from Joel S. Biddle and assumed operation of the business on May 25. Biddle has been tossing pennies into a six-gallon can since he opened the parlor in December 1959 and took them to First National Bank of Holyoke Friday to be counted—$267.53 worth of pennies.

Holyoke Diamond Jubilee officials are expecting the largest crowd of the week-long event on Wednesday as two of the major attractions near—the big buffalo barbecue and the grand Jubilee parade.
