|HHS recognizes winter athletes|

Holyoke High School cheerleaders, basketball players, swimmers and wrestlers were recognized Monday, March 18 for their participation in the 2012-13 winter sports season.
Prior to the awards portion of the night, athletes, coaches and family members enjoyed a potluck dinner in the old gym before athletic director Sandra Rahe initiated the ceremony.
Cheer coach Jane Zink recognized her eight cheerleaders as letterwinners. She praised the girls for their hard work through the fall and winter sports seasons.
Letterwinners include juniors Tia Huffman, Audi Peña and Brittney Prottsman; sophomore Taylor Goldenstein; and freshmen Peyton Dittmer, Adi Bencomo, Lori McWilliams and Megan Parker.
Coaches Scott Dille, Ben Rahe and Nic Balog presented awards to the boys’ basketball team which finished the season and district tournament in fourth place, qualifying them for the regional tournament.
Junior Logan Tharp was recognized for earning LPAA All-Conference honors.
Letterwinners include seniors Logan Zeiler, Brett Cumming, Deyten Klein and Matt Golden; juniors Tharp, Ryan Parker, Trevor Dalton, Tanner Smith and Zach Roll; sophomores Tito Fierro and Wyatt Powell; and freshman Bradley Cumming.
Participation awards were received by juniors Saul Ramos, Daniel Bencomo, Andrew Kent and Alan Madrid; sophomores Jesus Martinez and Kody Timm; and freshmen Alex Yanez, Xander Nelson, Edgar Cruz, Taylor Mayden, Jesus Martinez, Jesus Loya, Tyler Loutensock and Jahir Gardea.
Eighth graders Tyler Camblin and Austin Herman were acknowledged for helping with team manager duties.
Coaches Arlan Scholl, Kia Kassman and Dave Rice presented awards to the girls’ basketball team for their accomplishments. The team finished the season one win away from being acknowledged as a top eight team in 2A.
Senior Erin Vieselmeyer and junior Maddie King were recognized for earning LPAA All-Conference honors.
Along with Vieselmeyer and King, other letterwinners include seniors Becca Weaver and Chandler Gerk; juniors Tia Huffman, Zuri Lopez, Audi Peña and Jacinda Krueger; sophomore Megan Vieselmeyer; and freshmen Adi Bencomo and Roni Beavers.
Earning a manager letter was senior Rachel Schneider.
Those who received participation awards include senior Gabriela Chavez; juniors Eva Penzing, Brenda Payan and Elli Ahro; sophomores Stefani Razo, Ana Olivas, Rosa Ochoa and Kaylee Ham; and freshmen Peyton Dittmer, Monica Montes, Megan Parker, Jaylene Dominguez, Savanna Krueger and Josilyn Lutze.
Coach Luke Thomas was unable to attend the event but did prepare a short video praising the girls and thanking the people who helped the team throughout the year.
Letterwinners on the girls’ swim team include senior LaKyla Moore; juniors Ashley Humphreys and Malena McWilliams; sophomore Jentry Andersen; and freshmen Dani Brandt and Lori McWilliams.
Participation awards were received by senior Katlin Davis; juniors Brittney Prottsman and Meg Strauss; and sophomore Anastasia Conklin.
Coaches Jack Garrison and Cutter Garrison presented the wrestlers with awards for the 2012-13 season.
Jack Garrison noted the growth of the team and anticipates them being in contention for a state title within a few years.
To earn a letter, a wrestler must have obtained 30 team points throughout the season.
Senior Jesus Hermosillo and sophomore Dylan Kotch were recognized for placing second and third, respectively, at the state tournament. Seniors Astolfo Rojo and Spencer Kotch and sophomore Nicholas Ortner were also recognized for qualifying for state.
Also receiving letters were seniors Ben Martinez and Leo Ortiz; sophomore T.J. Gertner; and freshman Eric Rojo.
Receiving participation awards were seniors Cesar Hinostroza and José Jaquez; sophomores Morgan Golden, Nathan Miles, Javy Rojo and Luke Stewart; and freshmen Issac Brandt, Marques Harvey, Cavin Kramer, Cody Lamm, Fernando Lopez, Fernando Rojo and Sidney Struckmeyer.
