The 2013 Phillips County Art Show is sponsored by Phillips County Arts Council. The art show will be held Thursday, March 21 through Sunday, March 24 at Holyoke High School, 545 E. Hale St.
Artists of Colorado and Nebraska will display their work. Area artists, from beginners to professionals, and students are encouraged to enter.
Artwork can be entered on Thursday, March 21 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Accepted media includes acrylic, china painting, creative stitchery, collage, colored pencil, drawings, fibers, hand-thrown ceramics and pottery, jewelry, mixed media, oil, pastels, pen and ink, pencil, photography–traditional, photography–enhanced, scratch art, sculpture, stained glass, watercolor, weaving and wood carving.
Judging will be held on Friday, March 22, and an oral critique for artists and anyone interested will be offered from 1:30-3 p.m. The show will be open for public viewing on Friday from 3-10 p.m., Saturday, March 23 from 9 a.m.-10 p.m. and on Sunday, March 24 from 1-4 p.m. Many art pieces are available for purchase, and the public is encouraged to visit the show and appreciate the work of the area artists.
Entries will be judged by Larry Prestwich of Sterling. Prestwich taught art at Northeastern Junior College for 34 years. He holds a bachelor’s degree in art from the University of Utah and a master’s degree in art from Brigham Young University. Having taught many classes in drawing, design, print-making, painting and sculpture during his career, he most enjoys drawing and is currently working in pen and ink.
Kathryn Wernsman of Haxtun will judge the student art. Wernsman recently retired from her position as the K-12 art teacher in Fleming. During her 34 years of teaching, she concentrated on exposing her students to as many techniques and materials as possible. She is currently painting portraits in oil. She will give a critique for students on Friday at 1:30 p.m., when she will discuss individual works, offer suggestions and answer questions.
An artist workshop exploring the medium of pastels will be taught by Prestwich on Saturday, March 23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Holyoke High School art room. Prestwich is a past member of the Pastel Society of America. To register for the workshop, contact Teresa Mailander.
