After months of waiting, Holyoke residents were finally able to explore the new Melissa Memorial Hospital building during its open house Friday, March 7.

Holyoke High School senior Andy Bencomo and Fleming High School senior Fletcher Gorman received the full-tuition and housing Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship to the University of Colorado through caddying at Ballyneal in Holyoke.

Laura Bittner, executive assistant at Highline Electric Association, retired Feb. 29 after 40-plus years as a Highline employee.

The staff at Centennial Mental Health is settling into its new home at the Phillips County Resource Center at 127 E. Denver St. Formerly located at 109 N. Campbell Ave., the Centennial offices were moved to their new location in January.

The city’s municipal well located at Holyoke City Park hit rock bottom last week when the submersible lift pump broke about 20 feet below the surface, dropping the pump and 220 feet of pipe into the well shaft.

The Koshare Indian Dancers from LaJunta will be performing in Holyoke Saturday, April 30, sponsored as a Holyoke Centennial Show by the Holyoke Chamber of Commerce. The Koshares include about 45-50 Boy Scouts from southern Colorado.

The city’s residential street lights have been converted from 175-watt mercury vapor lights to 100-watt high-pressure sodium lights. The new street lights will save the city around $2,806 per year.

The Holyoke Chamber of Commerce trade committee is promoting a favorite store clerk contest in Holyoke.

The Holyoke area was hit by heavy rainfall and high winds Tuesday. By Wednesday, the rain had turned to snow that covered the ground only lightly.

Fifty-one women and 62 babies and children are enrolled in the weekly preschool swimming class taught by Holyoke swim coach Gary Sperber.

Phillips County was on the edge of one of the biggest snowfalls of the year, which dumped up to 10 or 12 inches of snow in parts of Colorado, including the east central portion of the state.

The laying of the cornerstone for the remodeled St. Patrick’s Church will take place Sunday, March 17, the feast-day of its patron.

Work on the new Sterling Savings & Loan Association building here is rapidly nearing completion and the grand opening will be announced soon.
