Another exciting Holyoke High School basketball season is already underway, with the JV and varsity boys having played at Wray Tuesday, Dec. 2. The game kicked off what the team hopes will be a very successful 2008-09 season. Making another State basketball appearance would certainly be a great way for boys’ basketball coach John Baumgartner to finish his 15th season of coaBoys BB letter winnersching at HHS, and he has enough returning players to make it a good possibility.
The 2008-09 season also marks the head coach’s 20th year of coaching all together. Assisting him once again this year is Scott Dille, who has been at Baumgartner’s side for two prior seasons. Together, the coaches will lead a team of 24 players that includes five seniors, seven juniors, five sophomores and seven freshmen. Last year, the boys took both district and regional championship titles, and placed fifth at the state tournament in Pueblo. “That was a great accomplishment,” said Baumgartner, “but we want more this year.”
Having so many returning players will give the team an edge this year, he hopes, over the others. However, he added, he knows the boys have some tough competition ahead of them. “As coaches, our goal is always to keep the players improving as a team and make sure they get better each day,” he said. “We’re excited about the season, but we need to take it one day at a time and one game at a time.”
One major obstacle last season was injuries, but Baumgartner said this year, all of his players are back, and so far appear to be in top form. Returning letterwinners who will lead the way for the boys’ basketball team are seniors Michal Brown, Austin Tharp and Colby Wailes; juniors Ryan Baumgartner, Kyle Carper, Logan Krueger and Evan Swanson; and sophomore Preston King. Other team members include seniors Erik Schrain and Sheng Xuezhi; juniors Shaun Beck, Tiago Cavalcanti and Brandon Oosthuysen; sophomores Brian DeBoer, Cody Fricke, José Goytia and Willie Greenman; and freshmen Reid Baumgartner, Chris Bieber, Austin Killin, Jeremy Loutensock, Alex Quintana, Ryan Reynolds and Brent Vasa.
Tate Dille is stepping in as manager this season and Trevor Dalton, Tanner Smith and Logan Tharp will be tracking the stats for the team. Results of the Dec. 2 game at Wray will appear in next week’s Enterprise. This week, the boys and girls also play at Brush on Thursday, Dec. 4 and at home against Idalia Saturday, Dec. 6.
