John Ayoub has been offered a contract for the CEO position at Melissa Memorial Hospital after serving as interim administrator since March 1.

Phillips County Commissioners voice concern that time is running out to raise funds for the challenge grant awarded for the proposed Phillips County Event Center. In April 2006, the Gates Family Foundation agreed to give the project $307,000 if the rest of the funds are provided by the county by Nov. 1, 2007. The county has raised $2,458,737, but still needs $603,000 before the deadline.

After weeks of studying the potential benefits of consolidating all of the law enforcement entities into a single agency, Phillips County Commissioners reported Monday it looks like that discussion will cease for now.

New postcards of the Heginbotham Library are now available for purchase. The cards feature a photo of the library, taken by Joanie Groshans, winner of the recent photo contest sponsored by Friends of the Library.

Oct. 8, 1987

“Shades,” a multimedia presentation on the subject of peer pressure, is being sponsored in Holyoke by the local PACT group. The presentation will be shown to the public Oct. 13 and to the junior high and senior high students Oct. 14.

Melissa Memorial Hospital has instituted a new credit policy in order to stem the rising tide of money it loses by writing off unpaid bills. Beginning Oct. 1, the hospital required patients to pay for services when they are rendered unless other arrangements have been made with the hospital’s admission or business departments.

Oct. 5, 1972

The Holyoke Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a sugar beet tour of acreages in Colorado and Nebraska on Oct. 12 to give local residents the opportunity to see the actual digging of beets and the type of equipment being used.

The free watermelon feed sponsored by the Holyoke Chamber of Commerce and the merchants will be held in the business district tomorrow, Oct. 6.

Digging of sugar beets started last Monday, with L.E. Smith and Sons of Imperial, Neb. delivering the first load of beets to the Holyoke station of Great Western Sugar Co.

Oct. 4, 1962

Holyoke Boy Scouts will distribute large Goodwill bags here Saturday, Oct. 6 and will collect the filled bags one week later, Oct. 13. Scouts in seven towns in this area will participate in the project for Goodwill Industries of Denver.

Darrel “Red” Sullivan, lessee of the local Conoco station, recently purchased the Conoco bulk plant from Leo Dittemore of Julesburg. He took over the business last Thursday, Sept. 25.

The Venango High School band, consisting of 56 members, plus chaperones, will attend Band Day in Lincoln, Neb. on Saturday, Oct. 13.
