Written by Brenda Johnson Brandt

Five charges for 2012-13 were approved for the Holyoke School District Re-1J Accountability Advisory Committee at the Sept. 4 meeting of the school board.

The board charged the district committee with the following tasks:

—serve as 1338 Council to provide input to revisions of teacher and principal evaluation policies as a result of changes to the law from SB191.

—review unified improvement plans prior to final presentation to the board of education.

—receive reports throughout the budget development process and offer comments on the budget priorities and the proposed 2013-14 school budget.

—review the expenditures of the first two years of the mill levy override and evaluate the use of the funds in relation to the campaign information and district priorities.

—DAAC members are invited to volunteer as participants in focus groups with students.

Supt. Bret Miles gave a construction update, noting the roof project punch list has been completed. The gym rooftop unit is running, but still needs balancing work.

Certificates of completion for all phases of the construction will be coming before the board soon for approval.

Board member Kris Camblin said he felt well-informed throughout the construction this summer and appreciated the good communication. Miles said the superintendent on site has been great, and Robert Jacobs, director of transportation and maintenance and facilities, has been amazing, he added.

In further report, Miles introduced the shared leadership committee structure and job descriptions of the committees. He said he’s pleased that they continue to have licensed staff sign up for these committees. Participation of community members is valued, as well.

The seven committees in the shared leadership structure include leadership team, budget and facilities, district accountability advisory, technology, health advisory, superintendent’s advisory and standard of excellence.
