The fire-breathing Dragons are back and ready to fight hard to win a girls’ State Basketball Championship. The JV and varsity girls began this season with an opening game aGirls BB letter winnersgainst Wray Tuesday, Dec. 2.
Arlan Scholl is leading the Holyoke High School girls’ basketball team into what he hopes to be an exciting season. This marks Scholl’s 21st year of coaching—eight of which are with HHS girls’ basketball. At his side, assistant coaches Clint Goldenstein and Rebecca Helm are ready to get in on the action and help make the girls a strong team that strives together on the court.
Goldenstein is in his sixth year of coaching various sports at Holyoke schools while Helm returns to take on her third year with assisting coaching at Holyoke. The line-up is looking very strong with 30 girls out. Scholl said, “We have one returning starter and eight varsity players who had a lot of in-game playing time.” These girls will carry forth their skills into this season. This year there are seven seniors, seven juniors, 10 sophomores and six freshmen on the team. Last year, the girls took the regional championship title against Longmont Christian and placed fifth at State.
In their last five years of playing at State, the team has placed fifth, fourth, second, third and fifth in that order. In 2007 HHS girls got District runner up and in 2006 the girls received their third straight district championship. Scholl noted, “The girls had a great summer season.” He feels the girls are very competitive. He also said there is about an even amount of players from each grade and he is looking forward to see them all come together as a team.
Super Star, letter winning players returning are seniors Phawn Carper, Katie Hoffner and Maddie Starkebaum; and juniors Shelby Beavers, Chasity Pelle, Nora Roth and Marissa Smith. The team also includes seniors Vanessa Nishi, Eveliina Rantanen, Krista Schafer and Flor Varela; juniors Molly Fricke, Pilu Lund and Elle McGaw; sophomores Emma Adams, Patricia Adams, Valerie Auersperg, Mallory Bennett, Becca Brandt, Heather Duester, Kaylee Groshans, Chantel Rafert, Ella Stewart and Marci Vasa; and freshmen Emily Bradley, Annie Daniel, Laura Gerk, KrisAnna Ham, Shayna Oosthuysen and Brooke Parker.
