|Family Dollar store a concern|
|Written by Gordon Thomas|
I thought it strange that the town of Holyoke would go out of their way to welcome some, maybe unfair, competition for two or more existing Holyoke businesses.
As reported in the Enterprise, the town of Holyoke will, with taxpayer’s money I presume, pave an alley near the new, soon to be, Family Dollar Store to accommodate deliveries, etc.
I have not been in a Family Dollar Store for some time, but remember them as being very well stocked, a great variety of everyday home necessities at prices that I am sure the local stores cannot compete with if they sliced their profits in half.
Family Dollar Stores, as a corporation, probably buy things by the ship load or train load while our local stores most likely buy a case or two.
I cannot imagine that Holyoke has sufficient population to support a Family Dollar Store. We’ll just have to wait and see who goes “belly up” first.
