A big celebration is in the wings for this Sunday, July 15, in Lamar, Neb.
The community will celebrate its 125th anniversary, or quasquicentennial, with a potluck meal, program and displays beginning at 5 p.m. at the community’s fire hall.
Laid out in 1887 by the Lincoln Land Company, the small community near the Colorado border, 25 miles west of Imperial, Neb. and 16 miles east of Holyoke, once thrived with a population between 300 and 400 people at its peak in the 1920s.
Its current population now sits at 23 residents counted in the 2010 U.S. Census. But even though the town is small, the excitement is huge for this weekend’s events.
Carolyn Wallin of Lamar has been planning for the celebration for months.
She put hundreds of hours in so far, much of it compiling a 150-page book of the town’s history and including information submitted by numerous families with ties to Lamar.
The book will be on sale at the celebration.
For the 5 p.m. potluck supper, table service and drinks will be provided. Families or individuals attending are asked to bring a covered dish or dessert. A free will offering for expenses will be taken.
Any profits after expenses for the book and meal’s free will offering will be donated to the Lamar Volunteer Fire Department, Wallin said.
The meal will be in the fire hall behind the town’s old bank building, now a community room.
Displays featuring family histories, the now-closed school’s history, the town’s centennial and other historical artifacts will be set up in the community room. Stan Cross of Lamar is expected to bring an old tractor and possibly old machinery of a bygone era to set up outside.
Following the meal, there will be a short program, Wallin said.
There is still time to bring information for the displays, Wallin noted. Contact her at 308-882-5922 if interested and for more information.
