Written by Holyoke Enterprise

Eleven Holyoke swimmers ranked in the top six in their age divisions to claim high-point trophies for the six-meet season of Northwest Kansas Swim League (NWKSL).

The league meet July 6-7 in Goodland, Kan. marked the end of a very successful season for Holyoke Swim Team.

Kristin Vieselmeyer earned two trophies, one for earning the most points in 8 and under girls’ competition at the league meet and the other for 1st-place in her division for the season.

Other Holyoke 8 and under girls who earned season-end trophies were Elise Krogmeier, 4th; and Danielle Wilkening, 5th.

In 9-10 girls’ competition, Emily Jelden placed 2nd for the season, Demiah Hernandez, 3rd; and Lali Marquez, 6th.

Seth Watson finished 4th overall in 9-10 boys.

Holyoke dominated in 13-14 girls’ season competition with Dani Brandt finishing 2nd; Emily Krogmeier, 3rd; Lori McWilliams, 5th; and Tara Krueger, tied for 6th.

Holyoke swimmers broke five relay records and one individual pool record at last weekend’s meet.

Watson set a new record of :18.92 in the 9-10 25 yd. backstroke, breaking a 2011 record by .47 of a second.

Holyoke’s 8 and under girls’ team with Vieselmeyer, Krogmeier, Lauren Herman and Wilkening set a new record of 1:23.34 in the girls’ 100 yd. freestyle relay. They bettered a 2005 record by 1:69 seconds.

In 9-10 mixed relay competition, Watson, Jelden, Marquez and Hernandez clocked a 1:08.05 in the 100 yd. freestyle relay to break the 2007 record by 4.48 seconds. Then the quartet swam the 100 yd. medley relay in 1:19.39 to better the 2011 record by 8.73 seconds.

Holyoke’s girls’ 13-14 relay team also broke two records with Brandt, Krogmeier, McWilliams and Krueger.

Their time of 2:02.77 in the 200 yd. freestyle relay broke a nine-year-old record by 5.3 seconds. Then they clocked a 2:22.59 in the 200 yd. medley relay to break a 2007 record by 5.56 seconds.

As a team, Holyoke finished 3rd with 212 points. Goodland won the league meet with 355.5 points, followed by Burlington 225, Holyoke 212, Colby 202, Oberlin 199, Wray 198, Oakley 79 and Flagler 38.5.

Brenda Krueger, 8 and under coach, praised the whole team. She cited the brand new swimmers who “got the swim bug” and placed in the top six at meets throughout the season. She was so proud of how they learned the strokes and worked to perfection.

And the seasoned 8 and unders just kept getting faster and faster, said Krueger. She was extremely pleased with their record-breaking performance in the girls’ 100 yd. freestyle relay.

Coach Adria Colver said throughout the season, other clubs commented on how nicely Holyoke swimmers focused on details like turns and finishes—and how disciplined they were in warm-ups.

“That, and the great improvement seen at League confirmed what Aly (Coach Alyson Brinkema) and I have thought all along,” said Colver.

“This has been an exceptional year,” she added.
