Dragons 1-1 in Akron doubleheader PDF Print E-mail
Written by April Peregoy

Holyoke’s varsity baseball team posted a strong win at Akron on Tuesday, April 21 in the first half of doubleheader action, but then fell to the Rams by 10 in the second game.
The Dragons 10-run ruled the Rams, 16-6 in the sixth inning during Game One, only to have the tables turned on them in the fifth of Game Two, losing 3-13.

Holyoke 16, Akron 6
“We played really well in this game,” said coach Kyle Bules. “We started out with a lead-off home run by Ryan Baumgartner and kept the pressure on from there.  We were very disciplined at the plate and that was nice to see. We were able to capitalize on Akron mistakes.”
Holyoke did start out strong at bat, earning two, three and eight runs in the first three innings. At the same time, the players also held their own in the field, refusing to let the Rams cross home plate.
Akron finally got on the boards in the bottom of the fourth, scoring all of their six runs for the game.
With no runs made in the fifth, the score was 14-6 as Holyoke again took a turn at bat in the top of the sixth. They were able to push two more players across the plate, giving them the 10-point advantage.
Despite their best efforts, the Rams were unable to push any more runners through and HHS took the victory.
“Austin Tharp pitched a complete game and he was tough for Akron to handle,” said a proud coach Bules. “He had two earned runs and the rest of their runs came off our two errors.”
In addition, Tharp had an impressive 11 strikeouts recorded, five hits and four bases on balls.
Ryan Baumgartner had the team’s only home run of the day and three RBIs. Logan Krueger contributed two doubles and three RBIs.

Holyoke 3, Akron 13
Holyoke looked set to give a repeat performance of Game One in the first inning, opening up the game with two runs, then holding Akron scoreless in the bottom.
However, a couple of errors in the second inning gave the Rams some momentum, and according to Bules, “everything snowballed from there.”
The Dragons earned their last run of the day in the top, but Akron scored seven runs in the bottom, surpassing HHS for a 7-3 score.
Neither team saw any runs in the third. Then Akron pushed four more players across the plate in the fourth and two in the fifth, while at the same time holding the Dragons to no score for the win.
Brandon Price pitched the first three innings and took the mound loss. He had six earned runs, two strikeouts and two bases on balls.
Krueger pitched the remaining two innings. He had no earned runs, one strikeout and one bases on balls. At bat, Krueger also hit a double as did Brett Gerk, who had two RBIs as well.
