Holyoke tracksters are rounding out their spring with the last stretch of the 2012 season track meets.

They competed at the Yuma/Washington County meet in Yuma last Tuesday, May 1. The following Friday they traveled to Longmont for the St. Vrain Invitational.

Holyoke boys placed eighth at the Yuma meet with 37 points. The girls’ team finished in 12th with 14 points.

“We have a great group of kids who have been working hard all year long, but the competition has been pretty tough,” said coach Sandra Rahe. “Every time our kids do better, it seems like everyone else in the state also improved.”

The top 18 in each event in 2A will compete in the state track meet May 17-19. There are no districts or regionals any more where the athletes have to get a certain placing to qualify for state. Therefore, all meets throughout the season are qualifiers because the times and distances are reported to CHSAA for ranking.

Rahe said right now five HHS tracksters are headed to state, including Alex Quintana in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles and the 400 and 800 meter races as well as the 4x800 meter boys’ relay team of Ryan Parker, Matt Golden, TJ Gertner and Tito Fierro.

“Each week kids get a new personal best time/distance, but they haven’t moved up into the top 18 yet,” said Rahe. Several kids and relays are somewhere in the 20th-28th ranking range.

She said the meet on Friday in Longmont was a great experience for some of Holyoke’s top tracksters. They all did better on times but just not enough to get in the top 18 yet.

Saturday’s league meet in Yuma is their last chance to qualify for the state meet. Rahe said she’s hopeful they can get one of the girls’ relays in the top 18 state ranking.
