Holyoke tracksters had great presence at last week’s track meets, bringing home some hardware from Chase County, Neb. on Tuesday, April 17 and from Wray Thursday, April 19.
“The kids did great!” said coach Sandra Rahe. “All coaches were very proud of how the kids performed this week. They are doing super!”
More than half the Holyoke athletes had personal records on either Tuesday or Thursday or both days.
Senior Alex Quintana landed himself six gold medals last week. At Chase County, he was first in the 400 meter, 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles. At Wray, his time of 2:01.93 in the 800 meter race was a personal best and a new meet record. He was also first in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles.

Tito Fierro did well in Chase County’s long jump competition, jumping close to 18’1”. TJ Gertner didn’t want to be outdone, said Rahe, so he responded with a personal best of 18’10.5” to win first place at the Wray meet on Thursday.
Jacinda Krueger also brought home a gold medal in the Chase County 100 meter dash.
Brittney Prottsman was a standout for the coaches last week, said Rahe. She ran the 3200, 1600 and 800 meter races both Tuesday and Thursday. “She has a great heart and shows such determination and courage in her racing—very fun to watch!” said Rahe.
The Dragons finished out their busy week with a meet in Akron Saturday, April 21. They were down in numbers due to other school events that day.
Holyoke boys finished seventh in Chase County with 55 points, fourth in Wray with 64.5 points and 18th in Akron with seven points.
In Chase County, the Lady Dragon girls’ team finished in sixth with 45 points. In Wray, they placed ninth with 23 points, and they were 13th in Akron with 14 points.
“The kids are starting to see growth as times go down or distances increase,” said Rahe. “They have set personal goals for all of their events and nutritional goals to make sure their bodies can withstand the strain each day. I can’t wait to see what the next few weeks will bring for all the athletes!”
