|Holyoke girls looking forward to golf season|

This time last year, the Holyoke girls’ golf team hadn’t been on the course much. Nasty conditions left little time for the team to prepare for their first tournament. That’s not the case this year.
Six girls make up the 2012 squad and they have had near perfect conditions to prepare in. Abnormally warm March temperatures have allowed the team time to hit the range multiple times. Head coach Garrett Gordon said last year they didn’t see range time until after the first of April.
This year’s squad is led by returning letterwinner sophomore Makayla Spitz. Spitz was the lone HHS golfer to participate in the regional golf tournament last year.
Others on the team include senior KrisAnna Ham, juniors Alyssa Cordova and Caitlyn Kramer, sophomore Kelsey Kramer and freshman Alex McCallum.

Gordon said he has seen a strong effort from the girls so far. He noted they really want to get involved in some 18-hole varsity tournaments this year and are driving themselves hard every day at practice.
Last year, the team mostly played nine holes in junior varsity competitions.
“They really want to practice,” Gordon said of the girls. He said the schedule will vary at each tournament with some of the girls playing varsity some weeks and junior varsity others.
The team will tee off Thursday, March 22 in Holyoke for a triangular beginning at 1 p.m. They are scheduled to travel to Brush Monday, March 26 for a 10 a.m. start time.
Other tournaments on the schedule include Friday, March 30 in Burlington; Saturday, March 31 in Yuma; Thursday, April 5 in Stratton; Thursday, April 19 in Wray; Tuesday, April 24 in Holyoke; and Tuesday, May 1 at Fort Morgan.
The regional tournament will be held at Broadlands in Broomfield Tuesday, May 8. The state tournament will be played at Boomerang in Greeley Monday-Tuesday May 21-22.
