Written by Holyoke Enterprise

Holyoke sixth-grader Rebecca Owens, pictured third from left, was honored Feb. 9 at the Holyoke Lion’s Den for her winning entry in the Lion’s International Peace Poster Contest. Pictured with her from left are Holyoke Lions president Jim Tomky, district Lions president Mike Reager, Rebecca’s family Jessica, Joan and Randy Owens and Holyoke Elementary School art teacher Christina Martinez.

Owens was awarded $100 at the district level and $250 at the state level for her winning poster. Owens’ poster will now advance through international levels of competition. One international grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners will be selected. The grand prize includes a cash award of $2,500 plus a trip for the winner and two family members to an awards ceremony at Lions Day with the United Nations. The 23 merit award winners will each receive a certificate and a cash award of $500.

The Holyoke Lion’s Den is cheering for Owens as her poster advances in the competition, and they hope her vision will ultimately be shared with others around the world.
