With the Brighton Invitational under their belts Saturday, Jan. 28, HHS wrestlers are only two weeks away from regional tournament action.

Nine varsity wrestlers competed in Brighton last weekend. Mark Edmonds and Broc Pelle both suffered disappointing defeats in their championships to place second in their weight divisions.

Edmonds lost 0-4 in an overtime match and Pelle was decisioned 6-9.

Jesus Hermosillo finished third for a great tournament at Brighton, said coach Jack Garrison. The junior wrestler is really coming along well, added the coach.

Other Dragons picked up some match wins for a good tourney.

On a downside for the tournament, senior Parker Redfern was injured at Brighton and will be out at least until regionals.

With regionals just around the corner, coach Garrison said the Dragons will be starting two-a-day practices soon.

Individual results from the Brighton tournament follow:

132 lbs.—Mark Edmonds placed second. He pinned Ulises Flores of Pueblo Centennial in 1:16, pinned Deshon Gray of Denver East in 3:32, won a 6-3 decision over Jacob Gerken of Fort Morgan and lost a 0-4 overtime decision to Alec Wyatt of Prairie View in the championship.

138 lbs.—Nick Ortner lost a 2-17 decision to eventual third-place finisher Luis Bejarano of Prairie View and lost a 4-10 decision to Dillon Loaiza of Brighton.

145 lbs.—Ben Martinez was pinned in 5:54 by eventual champion Jake Morrow of Brush, won a 6-2 decision over Powers Weilnau of Ft. Morgan and was pinned in 4:20 by Jordan Sailas of Ft. Lupton.

152 lbs.—Leo Ortiz was pinned in 1:25 by eventual fourth-place finisher Phoenix Ginther of Ft. Lupton and lost a 7-8 decision to Wyatt Filloon of Prairie View.

160 lbs.—Parker Redfern lost a 5-6 decision to James Hess of Yuma and injury defaulted to Juan Alcantar of Niwot.

170 lbs.—Broc Pelle placed second. He won a 19-4 tech fall over Damien O’Hare of Niwot, pinned Dillon Elnicki of Cherokee Trail in 1:43 and lost a 6-9 decision to Trevor Powers of Coronado in the championship.

He pinned Bo Bruning of Cherokee Trail in 4:42, was pinned in 1:15 by the eventual second-place finisher Tomas Martinez of Pueblo Centennial, pinned Harley Minarez of Prairie View in 4:45 and won by injury default over Bruning, who he had previously defeated.
