Mayor, 3 council members to be elected April 3 PDF Print E-mail

A mayor and three council members will be elected to four-year terms during a municipal election for the City of Holyoke Tuesday, April 3.

The four-year term for council member Kevin Scott is up and he plans to run for re-election, he said Monday, Jan. 30.

David Churchwell and Scott Murray’s seats are also up for election. Both were undecided as of Monday as to whether or not they plan to run. Churchwell was appointed in 2010 after Orville Tonsing took over as mayor. Murray was appointed in September 2011 following the resignation of Jessica Cumming. Cumming was appointed to the seat in 2010 following the death of council member Ray Bailey.

The mayor’s seat, which Tonsing filled in 2010 after David Nygaard resigned, is up for election. Tonsing said he plans to seek re-election.

Nomination petitions are available at the office of the city clerk/treasurer and may be circulated and filed with the city clerk beginning Friday, Feb. 3.

The deadline for filing a petition is Thursday, March 9 at 5 p.m.

Persons may be a candidate for municipal office if he/she is:

—18 years of age or older on the date of the election.

—has resided in the city of Holyoke for at least 12 consecutive months immediately preceding the date of the election.

—registered to vote.

Each nomination petition must be signed by at least 25 registered electors living within the city. Electors may register to vote at the office of the county clerk and recorder.

The final day to register to vote in the municipal election is March 2. Applications for an absentee ballot are available at the office of the city clerk/treasurer.
