The HHS Lady Dragon basketball season came to a close in a tough loss against Limon in the first round of regional action on Friday, March 6.
Traveling to Standley Lake High School in Westminster, Holyoke fell to the Limon Badgers 35-40.
“The loss to Limon was disappointing for us all, but we still had a very successful season finishing with 14 wins and nine losses,” said coach Arlan Scholl. He notes five of those losses came at the hands of state ranked and state tournament qualifying teams.
With the Lady Dragons struggling to score points, Scholl commented, “the ball just would not fall for us.” They made 14 out of 61 baskets for only 23 percent in field goals compared to Limon’s 33 percent.
While Holyoke’s offense was not on target, they stayed strong on defense. “We only committed 12 turnovers and caused Limon to turn the ball over 22 times,” said Scholl. “We played tough defense, but could just not overcome our poor shooting.”
Holyoke played very aggressively with four of the five starters at four fouls and the other fouling out at five.
The Badgers took an early lead with a nine-point advantage at the end of the first quarter. After a low scoring second quarter, Holyoke was down 10-19 at halftime.
The Dragons came back strong in the third quarter, outscoring Limon 12-5. While Holyoke came within two points of Limon at the end of the third quarter, they were not able to take the lead that the Badgers established early in the game.
Marissa Smith led the Dragon scoring with 14 total points landing three two-pointers, one three-pointer and five out of six free throws. In rebounds, Maddie Starkebaum pulled down 14.
Scholl said, “I would again like to thank the great Holyoke fans for their support throughout the season and look forward to another great season next year.”
