With 40 tracksters at the starting block for the 2011 spring season, Holyoke High School track team is pumped and ready for action.
Head coach Sandra Rahe said the huge squad is very young, but she is already seeing a lot of talent and potential. “I am very excited to see what they are capable of,” she said.
With more boys on the team than in past years, Rahe is looking forward to some great relays, both from the boys and girls.
Standout athletes returning include junior Jeremy Loutensock in distance events, junior Alex Quintana in hurdles and relays, seniors Heather Duester and Mallory Bennett both in sprints and relays and senior Marci Vasa in relays and triple jump.
Rahe anticipates these tracksters will only get better and improve as the season progresses.
Other returning letterwinners on the track team are seniors Patricia Adams, Becca Brandt and Cody Fricke; junior KrisAnna Ham; and sophomores Molly Brandt, Matt Golden and Lindsay Helgoth.
“We also have several talented newcomers that did well in junior high, and I look forward to seeing them in competition soon!” added Rahe.
Track team members include seniors Seth Baker, Justin Cooper, Carolina Hermosillo, Trixi Presich, Pekka Roavas, Joel Rodriguez, Ella Stewart and Julian Titze; juniors Philip Buck, Margarita Fierro, Matt Wittman and Jordan Zeiler.
Sophomores Cierra Prelle, Erin Vieselmeyer and Becca Weaver; and freshmen Daniel Bencomo, Shobi Burris, Carlos Diaz, Tia Huffman, Alyssa Killin, Maddie King, Jacinda Krueger, Zuri Lopez, Alan Madrid, Ryan Parker, Audi Peña, Brittney Prottsman and Saul Ramos.
2011 is Rahe’s ninth year coaching track with four years at the high school level and five with junior high.
She is thrilled to have assistant coach Rod Trumper helping with jumps and the weight room as well as assistant coach Kelvin Haidle helping out with hurdles, relays and starts. Rahe plans to focus on throws this year, which is a new area for her.
Student managers are Brenda Hernandez, Shaylee Krueger and Rachel Schneider.
Parents and fans should note Colorado is using a new ranking system to qualify athletes for the state meet. Instead of using qualifying times and distances, at the end of the regular season the top 18 athletes in each 2A event, regardless of region, will get to move on to state.
Also this year a change has been made so 1A has their own classification instead of being grouped with the 2A schools.
