Laura Gerk went down in the HHS record books at Thursday night’s game in Haxtun. The junior athlete set a new Holyoke school record in girls’ basketball, making eight three-pointers in a single basketball game.
“What a great game at Haxtun for Laura Gerk,” said coach Arlan Scholl. “This is a great accomplishment, and our coaches and team congratulate her on great shooting.”
The rest of the Feb. 10 game, however, didn’t turn out quite so well, said Scholl. As a team, the Dragons only shot 20 percent from the two-point range and 42 percent from the free throw line.
“That is just not good enough to get the win in most games,” he said. Holyoke lost to the Bulldogs 44-51.
Scholl added, “Our effort was there, but the finish was just not to be on this night.”
The Dragons led by one at the end of the first quarter, then fell behind by five at halftime.
They outscored Haxtun again in the third quarter, lessening the gap to two points heading into the final period. The Bulldogs finished the game strong, landing the seven-point win over Holyoke.
Taking credit for over half of Holyoke’s points, Gerk led Dragon scoring with an impressive 28 points including eight three-pointers, one two-point shot and two for two from the line.
Senior Marci Vasa landed 12 rebounds, three steals and four assists in Thursday night’s game. Additionally, Vasa and Erin Vieselmeyer each had one block.
Regular season games end this week for the Lady Dragons. “We have two more tough games this week as we travel to Akron and then face a tough Sedgwick County team here at home on parents’ night.” said Scholl.
“We will work hard and prepare to win these two games. The girls always give me their best effort, and I will expect our team to compete at a high level.”
The Thursday, Feb. 17 games begin in Akron at 4:30 p.m. Holyoke hosts Sedgwick County Friday, Feb. 18 at 4 p.m.
The Lady Dragons’ first round of district basketball will be played at Wray Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 6 p.m.
