A six-point win over county rival Haxtun Thursday, Feb. 10 completed the two-game sweep in the Phillips County Shootout for the Dragons.
Holyoke boys’ basketball managed to hold on late in the contest to secure a 61-55 victory over their neighbors to the west.
Coach Scott Dille said it wasn’t the prettiest game but the kids competed well when their backs were against the wall.
The Dragons jumped out to an early 13-7 lead and took a 27-22 lead into the locker room at the half.
Haxtun fought their way back into the game and led by one, 40-39, after three quarters of play.
Holyoke managed to hang 22 points on the scoreboard in the final period while giving up only 15 to the Bulldogs to seal the victory.
Dille said it’s always fun playing Haxtun because the crowd is always really into it. It was no different last Thursday as fans from both sides created a loud environment for the rivalry game.
Julian Titze led the team with 20 points. Reid Baumgartner and Alex Quintana each scored 13.
Titze and Baumgartner were perfect from the charity stripe. Titze went 6-6 while Baumgartner was 4-4.
The Dragons had a weekend off while preparing for two final games before district play. Dille said it will be important for the team to be a little more disciplined. “We just need to recognize certain situations and understand what we need to do,” the coach added.
The Dragons will travel to Akron Thursday, Feb. 17 for a 4:30 p.m. tip off. Sedgwick County will visit Holyoke Friday, Feb. 18 for parents’ night and senior recognition. Games are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
Holyoke will host Wiggins Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 6 p.m. in the District 2 tournament. The winner of the game will advance to play games Thursday, Feb. 24 and Saturday, Feb. 26 at NJC. The regional tournament will be held March 4-5.
