Written by Holyoke Enterprise

Two teams of Holyoke Elementary and Junior High students traveled to Fort Morgan Saturday, Feb. 7 to compete in a Brain Bowl.

The third-fourth grade team placed fourth with 95 points. Third grade members were A

nna Jelden, Luke Krogmeier and Jarrett Woodhead; and fourth graders were Sydney Goldenstein, Austin Herman and Dylon Lousberg.

Tying for fifth place was the fifth-sixth grade team, which consisted of fifth graders Sierra Anderson, Roni Beavers, Bailey Bradley and Sidney Struckmeyer; and sixth graders Jentry Andersen and Luke Stewart.

Eight other schools participated in the Brain Bowl, including Fort Morgan, Brush, Weldon Valley and Julesburg.

Three rounds were conducted in the morning. The first was a written round where all six students were able to contribute. The two teams in each age division with the highest number of cumulative points then entered the afternoon championship.

Each team consisted of five members, with an alternate allowed to substitute in halfway through each round. Each of the competitive rounds had 50 questions.

Once a team had buzzed in, they had 15 seconds to answer the question. If they gave a correct answer, they were awarded one point. If the answer was incorrect, the other team had five seconds to give an answer, which was worth two points if correct. No points were subtracted for wrong answers.

Junior high teacher Andrea Kammer, who taught in the Fort Morgan School District prior to moving to Holyoke, introduced Holyoke students to the event two years ago and maintains as facilitator of the teams for the Holyoke schools. Assisting her this year were coaches Linda Jelden and Gina Dorn.
