HHS cheerleaders brought home a runner-up trophy from the Class 2A State Spirit Championships held Saturday, Dec. 4 at the Denver Coliseum.
Members of the cheer team are seniors Mallory Bennett and Sydney Nelson, juniors Teanna Amaral and Whitni Redman, sophomores Molly Brandt and McKenna Heldenbrand and freshmen Tia Huffman and Brittney Prottsman.
“I think they did a phenomenal job,” said cheer coach Jane Zink.
Holyoke set the bar Saturday morning, as the cheerleaders performed first in the field of 14 cheer teams and nine pom squads.
The HHS cheer team turned in the top score in prelims and was one of only two called back for the cheer finals. Dove Creek took the state championship, with Holyoke earning runner-up honors.
Each team was judged on a 2.5 minute routine that included no more than 1.5 minutes in the music portion. A cheer or chant was required in the performance.
Judging criteria included technique, execution, athletic demand and overall effect.
