'Science on Wheels' program coming to SCORE camp in 2011 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Jan Schultz, The Imperial Republican

One of the new presentations coming to the 2011 SCORE camps in Imperial, Neb. next summer will be an interactive chemistry and physics program.

SCORE stands for Science Camps Offer Rewarding Experiences, and will mark its 14th year when it’s held in and around Imperial in mid-June.

Titled “CAPOW,” or Chemistry And Physics On Wheels, many of its activities involve audience participation, with a goal of sending people away feeling good about science and education, with a better understanding of how science affects their lives.

Dr. Dan Sullivan, a retired University of Nebraska-Omaha chemistry professor, will bring “CAPOW” to Imperial during the camps June 13-16, 2011.

While there, Sullivan will be holding programs for the grade 1-4 students, with four sessions also open to the public on Wednesday morning, June 15.

Later that day at 6:30 p.m., he will present a “CAPOW” science show at the Family Night, also open to the public. Following his show, people will be invited to explore the Edgerton Explorit Center’s Science Zone full of a variety of hands-on science activities.

SCORE Director Marla Smith said the Family Night is a way of saying thank-you to its camp volunteers and supporters who have given so much to SCORE.

Sullivan will also give a final program on Thursday morning, June 16, to grade 5-6 campers, which will also be open to the public.

The “CAPOW” program brings its science activities to about 30,000 youths every year via three colorful vans.

Sullivan and his team will interact with children so they can observe chemical and physical changes they may not have encountered before.

He said a major focus of his program is safety, and often ends with “flashes and bangs.”

Sullivan said after 45 years of teaching at UNO, nothing gives him more pleasure than doing science programs for kids.
