|Animal welfare investigations to begin in underserved counties|

There is good news for dogs, cats and horses living on the eastern plains—a new nonprofit organization is bringing animal welfare investigations to several underserved counties in Colorado, including Phillips County.
The new Colorado Humane Society and SPCA will work with local law enforcement and government agencies to investigate and prevent the cruelty and neglect of companion animals and horses (excluding livestock) within the state.
In addition, its mission is to serve as an advocate for animals through education. The Colorado Humane Society and SPCA is an independent, Colorado-based nonprofit organization not funded or managed by national advocacy groups or government agencies.
“We are honored to have the opportunity to provide animal cruelty investigations to underserved communities in Colorado,” says Duane Adams, Associate Director for the Colorado Humane Society & SPCA. “The need for this service is even greater in these tough economic times.”
In August, the Colorado Commission of Agriculture approved three Bureau of Animal Protection agents through the new Colorado Humane Society and SPCA. These agents will assist local agencies to investigate reports of animal cruelty in the following underserved counties: Bent, Crowley, Fremont, Huerfano, Kiowa, Kit Carson, Las Animas, Lincoln, Otero, Phillips, Prowers, Washington and Yuma.
“The Bureau of Animal Protection serves as a support mechanism to local law enforcement agencies in conducting animal cruelty and neglect investigations and we are happy to have the Colorado Humane Society and SPCA as partners in that effort,” said Dr. Kate Anderson, CDA’s bureau of animal protection administrator.
“The Department is dedicated to protecting animals within this state and believes this partnership will play an important role in animal welfare investigations.”
