Holyoke Gold Babe Ruth team came up one point short of winning the Border League championship Saturday, June 26. After a bye in the first round and a 12-2 victory over Wray, Holyoke narrowly lost to Oshkosh 3-4 in the final.
The team took an 8-2 record into the tournament and received the number two seed.
Members of the runner-up team include Kody Timm, Ramon Favela, Logan Tharp, Zach Roll, Brett Cumming, Astolfo Rojo, Logan Zeiler, Jesus Hermosillo, Daniel Bencomo, Jaydin Goldenstein, Trevor Dalton, Ryan Parker, Carlos Diaz, Dylan Kotch, Nathan Miles, Spencer Kotch and Tanner Smith.
Holyoke Gold Little League fell in the third-place game to Sedgwick County 4-9 to finish in fourth. They began as the number four seed with a 6-6 record and beat Oshkosh 9-5 to advance and face Fleming where they fell 6-7.
One point victories served as a theme for a couple of the Holyoke teams throughout the tournament. Holyoke Green Little League beat Chappell 8-7 and Oshkosh 6-5 after falling to Haxtun 7-10. They were the sixth seed with a 3-7 record and finished in fifth.
Holyoke Gold PeeWee was the five seed with a 2-8 record and won its first game 10-9 over Chappell before falling 4-11 to Sedgwick County and 6-17 to Haxtun to finish in fourth.
Holyoke Green PeeWee took a 1-9 record into the tournament and fell 1-12 to Oshkosh and 5-9 to Chappell to finish sixth.
Coaching the Holyoke Gold teams was Kyle Bules while Stefan Betley served as head coach for the Holyoke Green teams.
“This was a learning experience for the peewee team. More than half of the team was new to baseball,” Betley said. “The little league team finally learned to overcome adversity in the tournament. Down by four runs, this team could have given up and let their season come to an end. They fought back to take a lead and win with a walk off hit.”
