|County projects advance|

Phillips County Commissioners recently awarded a contract to McAtee Paving Company for the Event Center enhancement project with the lowest bid of $178,611.
They will have 40 working days to complete the project including sidewalks and the blacktop parking area, reported commissioners at their April 30 meeting.
Another county project moving forward is the construction of the front steps at the Phillips County Courthouse. The State Historical Fund approved the plans, and bids will be accepted until May 14. A separate bid will also be taken for a new sidewalk leading up to the steps.
Phillips County will also be soliciting bids for a Geographic Information System (GIS) to convert maps of the county to an online format which can be easily used by 911 emergency workers, the county road and bridge crew and other county employees.
Phillips County’s landfill lost a three-sided shed used to store cardboard due to wind damage from the April 13 storm. Commissioners noted the shed will need to be rebuilt.
Monies will be exchanged this month for a pass through grant from University of Nebraska at Lincoln. The $15,500 grant and study will be used to see if it is feasible for Wisdom Poultry to put a plant in Haxtun.
In other business in the month of April, commissioners:
—accepted the offer from Raising Ranchers 4-H Club to plant, weed and do upkeep for the flower beds at the Courthouse.
—discussed the Holyoke Centennial 4-H Club’s painting projects at the Phillips County Fairgrounds.
—noted county employee Bob Patton died. They are currently looking for a road worker to replace him in District 1.
—noted Ace is the new dog in training with the Phillips County Sheriff’s Dept.
