Lady Dragons suffer weekend losses to Brush and Akron PDF Print E-mail
Written by Darci Tomky
Holyoke Lady Dragons struggled in competition last weekend, losing to Brush 33-51 at home Friday, Dec. 11 and to Akron 28-46 on the road Saturday, Dec. 12.

Team members continue to fight through some poor shooting, said coach Arlan Scholl. “Twenty-five percent field goal shooting won’t win you many games.”

However, Scholl noted the girls have played hard, practiced hard and continue to play well in other phases of the game. “Our rebounding has been good and our hustling defense has created some turnovers for our opponents, but we just can’t seem to turn those turnovers into points,” he said.

Continuing work on shooting and passing, Scholl said they look forward to having a full line up on the floor in the varsity game.

“I told the girls it is not the adversity that you encounter, but rather how you respond to that adversity,” he said. “Our heads are up, and we are going hard after another victory.”

Holyoke 33, Brush 51

In Holyoke’s home game Friday, the Beetdiggers came out strong from the beginning, giving Brush the lead over the Dragons throughout the game. Brush dominated the scoring and led in all four quarters, giving them the 18-point lead at the final buzzer.

Marissa Smith and Nora Roth led the Holyoke scoring, both with eight points, and Laura Gerk added seven.

Smith and Gerk each sunk one basket from behind the arc, and Smith landed three out of four free throws.

Dragons outrebounded Brush 30-29 with Chasity Pelle leading with 11.

Roth had two blocks, while Kaylee Groshans had two steals against the Beetdiggers. Smith totaled four assists in Friday’s game.

Holyoke 28, Akron 46

HHS struggled again Saturday night in a tough loss against Akron.

With Akron leading 16-4 at the end of the first quarter, the Dragons kicked it into gear in the second period to outscore the Rams 8-4, but it was not enough to take the lead. Akron kept up their shooting in the second half for the 46-28 win at the buzzer.

High scorer for the Dragons was Smith with 10 points, including two three-point baskets and two for two from the line, followed by Marci Vasa with eight points.

Holyoke topped Akron in rebounds 30-23. Pelle led the Dragons, pulling down 10 balls.
